HISTORY
The CABARRUS family,
of Basque origin, settled in Capbreton near Bayonne about 1570.
Their
keen sense of business led them to seize all opportunities to
invest in real estate, placing them at the top of the great fortunes
of Bordeaux.
In 1790, Jean Valère CABARRUS purchased the actual
domain of Château LAGRANGE. Later, he was able to acquire
the Augustinian Abbey of Isle in ORDONNAC in 1791, which was
sold as a national asset under advantageous conditions.
The following year, he bought some buildings from the Jacobins
of Bordeaux. On January 4, 1795 he purchased the domains of COUFFRAN
and PONTOISE in Saint-Seurin from Joseph Hector de Branne, famous
owner of MOUTON. Only PONTOISE would bear a trace of the CABARRUS
name.
The name would become famous thanks to beautiful Thérésa,
daughter of François de CABARRUS, the banker of the King
of Spain. She became Madame TALLIEN, and managed to save many
heads from the guillotine with her charm and great generosity.
She was even named «Our Lady of Thermidor»(after
the eleventh month of the French Revolutionary calendar). In
1859, the CABARRUS family conceded the domain to the BOUILLAUD
family. The heiress was a wine broker, the first woman to exercise
this profession until then strictly masculine. Lacking an heir
interested in taking over the estate, she decided to sell the
domain to Emile TEREYGEOL in 1959, who had returned to France
from Morocco at the end of the protectorate.
FAMILY
LCHATEAU PONTOISE CABARRUS
has belonged to the TEREYGEOL family since 1959, the year in
which Emile TEREYGEOL returned from Morocco (at the end of the
protectorate). At the age of 60, he started a new profession
as a winegrower. Despite several difficulties, he transmitted
his passion for the vine and wine to his descendants. François
TEREYGEOL, the actual owner, was 18 years old at the time. He
studied the essentials of viticulture and oenology at the Institute
for 3 years to learn how to make wine. In 1964, he started working
for his father, and helped him put together a team of competent
people.
He recruited qualified personnel, built up a client file,
and hired the respected oenologist, Jacques BOISSENOT.
In order to reduce the financial charges of the property,
he joined the INAO in 1966 as a technical controller where he
remained until 1983.
During these years, he continued to devote his free time to
developing the family business.
In 1973, Emile TEREYGEOL decided to retire, handing over the
estate to his two sons. François was named director.
In 1979, François TEREYGEOL and his wife, Odette (then
a schoolteacher), decided to purchase his brothers part
and to create a new family business.
In 1983, he left the INAO to dedicate himself full-time to
PONTOISE CABARRUS. Odette left her job as a teacher in 1986 for
the same reason.
Since that time, thanks to great efforts invested to bring
out the taste of the wine, they have been able to earn a living
from their business.
